Labour Day to be Launched Today

This year's activities for Labour Day will be unveiled on Monday (May 7) at a function scheduled for the Office of the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller, will be the main speaker at the launch, where the national and parish projects, theme and slogan for Labour Day 2012, will also be announced.

Speaking at a recent Labour Day National Planning Committee meeting, Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna, said the programme of activities will fit into the ‘Jamaica 50’ celebrations.

 “The mission for this Labour Day is really to clean up …Jamaica going into the celebrations of Jamaica 50,” she said.

Minister Hanna said a meeting was held with mayors and secretary managers to discuss some of the projects to be undertaken by the parish councils. “We want to make sure that everybody is on board in terms of knowing what was happening,” she said, noting that a deadline has been given to the mayors to submit their parish projects.

“We are at a point where I could positively announce that a lot of the issues that would have stalled the outcomes have already been put in place,” she said.

According to the Minister, an inter-ministerial committee has been meeting to discuss other activities, including Worker’s Week and the Labour Day church service and concert.

Other speakers at the meeting were: Director of Culture in the Ministry of Youth and Culture, Sydney Bartley; Director in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Marva Ximinnies; and Director of Communications and Public Relations at the Local Government and Community Development Ministry, Ann-Marie Mittoo.
