Labour Day 2010 to Focus on Children

Plans are in high gear for Labour Day 2010 activities, which will focus on children, with the slogan, ‘Our Children.Show Them We Care’.

Activities include the official launch of, Workers’ Week Thanksgiving Services in each parish (May 16), Labour Day activities (May 24) and the Labour Day concert.
This was announced at the first National Labour Day Planning Committee meeting held Wednesday (April 14) at the Banquet Hall, Jamaica House, Kingston.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, said that the theme was timely and most appropriate considering “all the issues that have affected our children in recent times.”
She said that it was important that emphasis be placed in this area and people are encouraged to demonstrate care and support for the children.
Over the past six weeks, a national Labour Day core group has been engaged in preliminary work, pertaining to the concept and activities for Labour Day and Workers’ Week.
Miss Grange called on the committee members, including representatives of private and public sector entities, to finetune the suggestions that were made.
“Make your recommendations, we can make amendments. It is not cast in concrete. This is your committee and whatever comes out of this committee, success or failure, Labour Day will be in your hands,” she told the gathering.
According to the Minister, Labour Day which falls on Sunday, May 23, this year, will be observed on Monday, May 24, in keeping with regulations regarding the observance of Public Holidays.
Miss Grange, who is also Chairman of the Labour Day Committee, said that workers of Jamaica will be recognised for their contribution to nation building during Workers’ Week, which begins one week prior to and culminates on Labour Day.
