The Full Story

The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has honoured 78 Councillors, staff, and citizens, who have given yeoman service to the city and the council.

At the KSAC’s inaugural civic and community awards ceremony held on Friday (November 27), at the Courtleigh Auditorium in Kingston, 73 staff and Councillors, including former Mayors, were presented with service awards in the categories of gold, silver and bronze, while five community awards were presented to citizens.

Local Government and Community Development Minister, Hon. Noel Arscott, in a speech delivered by Member of Parliament for West Rural St. Andrew, Paul Buchanan, encouraged the recipients to continue to give of their best.

“At all times, we must do the best we can to lift the bar, to lift not only KSAC, not only our parish divisions, but our country,” he said.

Mayor of Kingston, Senator Councillor Dr. Angela Brown Burke, thanked the recipients for the years of service, which they have given to the municipality.

“Many of us give service to our community without thinking about reward and awards. We do it simply because we are called to service, because we look around us and believe that of the little we have, we still can give… this evening is really paying homage to the work that you have been doing,” she said.

She said the decision was taken to recognise outstanding community members, Councillors and staff in one ceremony, “because in particular for our Councillors, there are very few occasions when people actually say thanks, when you have done well.”

The gold award was given to Councillors, who have served 20 years or more; silver award, 15 to 19 years; and the bronze award for nine to 14 years.

For staff, the gold award was presented to those who have served for 25 years and over; silver award, 20 to 24 years; and the bronze award, 15 to 19 years.

Among the staff and Councillors honoured were: Deputy Mayor, Andrew Swaby; Alvin Francis, Gareth Walker, Lee Clarke, Milton Jones, Georgia Palmer, Elaine Walker, Mavis Sawyer Farquharson, and Angela Martin Hinds.

Former Mayors recognised were: Ambassador Emerson Barrett, who served from 1970-1971; Coleen Yap, 1983-1986; and Desmond McKenzie, 2002-2011.
