KMA Water Supply Project gets $485.5 Million

A sum of $485.5 million has been allocated to the National Water Commission (NWC) to fund the Kingston Metropolitan Area (KMA) Water Supply Project. Details of the allocation are outlined in the 2007/08 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives. The project, which is slated to end in 2010, will provide an improved water supply system to the Kingston Metropolitan Area, including Greater Spanish Town, Southeast St. Catherine, Kingston and St. Andrew.
When fully completed, the facility will increase domestic production capacity to the Kingston Metropolitan Area by 13.5 imperial gallons per day. Targets for the project in the 2007/08 financial year include full completion of engineering and hydrogeological designs; 40 per cent completion of aquifer sustainability works; 50 per cent completion of rehabilitation works; the commencement of new source of development works and the completion of procurement for five construction contracts. Among the achievements for the project up to February this year, is the completion of the National Water Commission’s diagnostic study and improvement plan, as well as a detailed field assessment. The detailed engineering designs and tender documents are 90 per cent complete, while the Bulk Flow Meters have been purchased for the non-revenue water reduction and control programme.
