Kingston High School students receive scholarships

Four Kingston High School students, who were successful in their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations (CSEC), have been awarded scholarships valued at $770,000 by the University College of the Caribbean (UCC), in Kingston.
The four students, Shakera Fletcher, Kevoy Hall, Sean Roberts and Vanessa Davids will pursue tertiary studies, starting at the UCC in January 2011.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Andrew Gallimore in his remarks at the handing over ceremony at the UCC, on Friday November 19, congratulated the recipients.

“We are seeing something taking place here this morning that is going to change lives, that is going to impact far more than one life, because it is going to have a multiple effect. We are going to change little by little communities across Jamaica; we are going to show people that when we are diligent and you work hard, there will be a just reward for you,” Mr. Gallimore said.
“I want to congratulate you as young persons for your focus, for your determination and for your drive to succeed. We expect great things from you,” he told the recipients.
In her remarks, Deputy President, UCC, Dr. Sharon Hart urged the students to continue on the current scholastic path they are on, as they join the institution in January.
“This award is not just an acknowledgement of what the students have achieved, but an indication of their commitment to encourage them to dare to achieve even more. Students, you will be pleased to know that by accepting these UCC scholarships, you will be joining an institution that is one of Jamaica’s largest private universities,” Dr. Hart said.

She further noted that the UCC is grateful to be partnering with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in assisting the students to further their education.
“For any society, the investment and the promise of education is what can help to raise all of us, as well as our own country to a higher level of standard and improvement,” Dr. Hart said.
Meanwhile, Vice Principal of Kingston High School, Calbert Weir thanked the Ministry and the UCC for giving four students the opportunity to pursue higher education.
“The ease of access to higher education has rapidly diminished over the years, because of the prohibitive cost and the recurring economic challenges that the country continues to face. The provision of these scholarships should be seen as a significant investment to nation building,” Mr. Weir said.
In his response on behalf of the recipients, Kevoy expressed his appreciation to all the stakeholders who played a part in the initiative. The four students who were chosen by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, earned the highest number of passes in CSEC at the Kingston High School this year.
