Kingston High School Hosts Entrepreneurship Day

Grade 11 students of Kingston High School, downtown Kingston, were treated to a day of captivating activities during the inaugural staging of Entrepreneurship Day on Tuesday (March 23).
The Day’s activities, co-ordinated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, encouraged students to enter into entrepreneurial endeavours, and featured presentations from motivational speakers including broadcaster Mr. Patrick Lafayette and Homestyle Cooking and Natural Juices’, Ms. Sonia Gibbons.
The speakers promoted goal setting and participation in becoming productive citizens. Business Development Officer at the Jamaica Business Development Corporation, Ms. Winsome Armstrong, also made a presentation on what it entails to be an entrepreneur. Several successful entrepreneurs, who set up booths, were also on hand to share their experiences with the students.
Director of Labour Exchange at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Ms. Patrice Hylton, said that one of the essences of being an entrepreneur is being “your own employer.”

“When you go to school, education is very important, training is very important and some persons who probably won’t reach the required academic standard to be employed in a particular way, can use the skills that you garner at school to become your own business person,” she said.
Work Experience Co-ordinator at Kingston High School, Ms. Pauline Mullings, said the school was grateful to have been asked to host Entrepreneurial Day, adding that as a family, they will gain from the experience.
Booths were also set up by the Ministry as well as the Apiculture Unit and Aqua Division within the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Entrepreneurs with booths included Ican Flair, Irie Fi Real, and Exquisite Floral.
