Kingston Craft Market Being Refurbished

Phase one of the refurbishing works currently being undertaken by Urban Development Corporation (UDC) on the Kingston Craft Market, is scheduled to be completed by March 2, before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007.
In an interview with JIS News, Paul Griffith, Senior Project Manager at the UDC, said that phase one of the work is being done by members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
“Members of the JDF have been very active. They have been cleaning the building, painting and doing minor remedial works to the facade of the building,” he pointed out.
He informed that work began at the craft market on February 13, and had advanced to the point where phase one should be completed by March 2.
Mr. Griffith said that the refurbished Kingston craft market would provide a more pleasing environment for the craft vendors who do business there.
“The vendors in the craft market will have a more attractive environment that will enhance sales, by making it more pleasing to the visitors we expect to have during Cricket World Cup activities,” he said.The Project Manager also informed JIS News that when phase two of the refurbishing work is completed, the general environment should be more secure for potential shoppers.
“We expect to provide a far more secure and safe environment as it is in that phase we expect to do most of the major works, including the replacement of the roof, repairs to electrical works, and drainage works,” Mr. Griffith said.
Phase one of the upgrading works at the Kingston Craft Market is being done at a cost of $2.3 million.
