Kaiser Sponsors Environmental Programme

April 22, 2004

The Full Story

Kaiser Jamaica Bauxite Company (KJBC) will once again sponsor this year’s Jamaica 4-H Clubs environmental programme.
Introduced last year as a pilot project in seven parishes across the island, the competition seeks to highlight environmental issues that are topical in the society.
The St. Ann 4-H clubs have been added to the list this year, and Kaiser has also agreed to sponsor the parish.
In his address at a handing over ceremony for the sponsoring cheque, at Kaiser’s offices in Discovery Bay recently, Jamaica 4-H Clubs Executive Director, Lenworth Fulton, said he was very appreciative of the gesture, which would go a far way in increasing the knowledge base of children on environmental issues, both locally and nationally.
Mr. Fulton pointed out that the challenge programme would focus on areas such as land husbandry, pesticide usage, water quality, and solid waste management, and noted that the lives of about 54,000 persons would be touched by the programme.
The Executive Director said it was important that “we sell ideas of protecting the environment to our children, as not only are they our future, but they are the most likely persons to start bringing about meaningful change in the drive forward”.
Kaiser’s General Manager, Michael Muirhead, in his address, said he was heartened by the effort being made at protecting and sustaining the environment, and that the company was committed to working with all stakeholders to strengthen the programme.
He lamented that there was widespread apathy among Jamaicans when it came to the matter of protecting the environment, and stressed that more needed to be done, “as we might just be jeopardizing our own survival”.
In his remarks, Kaiser’s Environment Manager, Lloyd Smith, noted that he was particularly pleased that schools have been given an opportunity to be actively engaged in protecting the environment.
St. Ann 4-H Clubs Co-ordinator, Eugennie Walters, in her comments, said schools within the parish had shown increased interest in the programme.
She lauded Kaiser for its assistance in promoting environmental education in the parish and nationally.
