August 21, 2007

The Full Story

The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPSCo) is expected to complete its assessment of the extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Dean today (August 21), even as power is being restored to certain sections of the island.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller made this announcement yesterday (August 20), at a special post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, to provide the country with an update on the preliminary assessment of hurricane damage and to outline plans for recovery.
She informed that a preliminary assessment by the company has indicated that no serious damage has been detected at the power plants or sub-stations, and that sections of St. James, including Greenwood to Bogue, the Cornwall Regional Hospital and the Sangster International Airport, should have electricity restored as of yesterday afternoon.
Turning to the southern section of the island, the Prime Minister noted that power would also be restored to the industrial district of Kingston, including Hunts Bay to Rockfort, as well as sections of New Kingston.
Mrs. Simpson Miller said that the JPSCo has indicated that all the resources are available to deal with the restoration of electricity to the entire island.
In the meantime, the National Water Commission (NWC) has started to truck water to some communities that are now without their regular water supply, as a result of the passage of Hurricane Dean.
She told journalists that preliminary reports from the National Works Agency (NWA) have indicated that a total of 47 roads were impacted by the passage of Hurricane Dean and so far 17 roads have been cleared, allowing single lane traffic.
The agency also reported to the Prime Minister that the Palisadoes main road in Kingston was now open. Additionally, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay are also open with commercial flights expected to depart today (August 21).
