JPS will not Charge Customers for Hurricane Dean Repairs

President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS), Damian Obligio, has said that customers will not be asked to pay for repairs related to Hurricane Dean.
Speaking in an exclusive JIS interview yesterday (Aug. 22), Mr. Obligio said, “there is now a self-insurance fund built up overtime that should (have) enough money to cover this event.”
He added that there should be no billing worry “as we haven’t seen any massive damage.”
The JPS CEO stated that although a surcharge was imposed to recover the costs of Hurricane Ivan repairs, this came after two years.
Disconnections and new service connections have been suspended until restoration of service across the island is complete. However, Mr. Obligio stressed that customers must pay their bills for electricity already consumed.
