The Full Story

‘What makes our Jamaican heritage special?’ This is the question that the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) is asking, as it officially kicks off its 2013 Heritage Essay Competition.

The agency, which is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary as the information arm of the government, is inviting students between 9 and 12 years of age to enter the competition and have a go at the question in 400 to 500 words.

According to Chief Executive Officer of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, the agency is pleased to once again host this competition, which asks the children to demonstrate their understanding of Jamaican heritage.

“The students are being challenged to think about the various aspects of our heritage and how they help to distinguish Jamaica from anywhere else in the world. We are a unique people in many ways and our distinctive qualities are encapsulated in our heritage.  In the end, the children should understand our heritage better and be more appreciative,” she said.

The student with the most satisfactory answer, as selected by a panel of judges, will win a trophy and fabulous prizes courtesy of sponsors. Entries will be judged on relevance to the topic, originality, accuracy, analysis of researched data, neatness, presentation style and language skills.

Now in its third year, the competition will run from August 5 to October 25, 2013. The application form and guidelines are to be found on the JIS website at: www.jis.gov.jm. Essays must be submitted using this application form. Students may email: heritageessay@jis.gov.jm for further details.

The essay competition is one of several events that will mark the agency’s golden jubilee milestone this year. The celebrations began on July 28 with a Church Service at the Webster Memorial United Church on Half-Way Tree Road.

There will also be a book and a documentary on the history of the JIS; a newspaper supplement; a new and exciting website as well as the re-broadcast of several programmes from the television and radio archives, which should invoke feelings of nostalgia.
