JIS Continues to Promote Heritage Awareness

As the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) continues its involvement in Heritage Week activities, a team from the agency visited the St. Margaret’s Bay All Age School in Portland on October 12, to promote heritage awareness and to participate in that institution’s events.
During the visit, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, presented a heritage gift package consisting of posters of the National Heroes, and a DVD on the national symbols, to Principal of the school, Beulah Smith.
In her address to the students, Mrs. Rowe said she was very happy to share in the school’s heritage activities. “The JIS is here to serve you, and to help you remember what it means to be Jamaican,” she said.
She implored the students to be resilient, resourceful and ambitious, and encouraged them to “be a hero for someone, your teacher, your mom, your dad or your classmate.”
Special Projects Manager at the JIS, Latoya Crossman, engaged the students in interactive games, which saw each winning student being presented with a gift.

Other activities during the day included an audio-visual presentation by the JIS on Jamaica’s cultural heritage, and performances in songs and poems by students of the school.

The Principal thanked the agency for its gift and for the team members’ participation in the school’s activities.
Shanoy Ayres, a grade seven student at the school, said “it was good having the JIS, and I enjoyed the fun and adventure games that they did.”

The agency will continue to visit schools, engage the students and take part in various expositions across the island during Heritage Week, which is being observed October 10 to 18 under the theme: ‘I believe in Jamaica, Our people, Our Land, Our Heritage’.
