JIS and BCJ Take Part in Jones Town Primary Career Day

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) and the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica (BCJ) came together on May 30, to make Career Day an interesting experience for students at Jones Town Primary School, in Kingston.

Both entities not only shared information with the students about careers in the media, but to also “Appreciate their Individuality”, which was the theme for May 30, under the Child Month calendar of activities.

“Appreciate their Individuality” was one of the 31 actions on the calendar indicating what parents and guardians could do to empower their children during Child Month, which was observed in May under the theme – ‘Children’s Care and Protection: A Fi Wi Mission’.

Veteran Photographer at the JIS, Melroy Sterling, gave a group of students, who have an interest in photography, an entertaining lesson on how to take professional photographs.

“It was good teaching the youngsters about the work that we do at the JIS. The short time that I spent with them was good,” he told JIS News.

Public Relations Manager at the JIS, Marie Berbick-Graham, said the agency was pleased to establish partnerships with the Broadcasting Commission and all entities that “support the growth and development of the nation’s children.”

“We believe it is important for us to go beyond sharing information. We are here to demonstrate active participation in nation building through continued support of activities that enhance the lives and enrich the experiences of the nation’s children,” she said.

Earlier, students and their teachers participated in a one-hour session on media literacy, facilitated by Assistant Executive Director of the BCJ, Karlene Johnson. The students were also exposed to careers in the digital world, and success stories of Jamaican social media entrepreneurs.

The career day activity at Jones Town Primary was one of several outreach activities that the JIS participated in during Child Month. Other activities included a joint Children’s Day initiative with the National Child Month Committee in the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre and tree-planting exercises with students at selected primary schools in the parishes of St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
