The Full Story

Jingle and mascot competitions are among activities being organised by the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) for Child Month in May.

The Child Protection Jingle competition, which gets under way on May 3, invites young people to submit creative songs in keeping with the themes of childcare and protection.

Chief Executive Officer of the CPFSA, Rosalee Gage-Grey, launched the schedule of events at the agency’s Duke Street offices in downtown Kingston on Tuesday (May 1).

The winner will receive a computer tablet and have the opportunity to work with a popular artiste to record the song. A cash prize of $7,000 will be awarded for second place and $5,000 for third place.

Entries are to be submitted via the CPFSA’s YouTube channel, and the winner will be announced on May 28.

Meanwhile, the Child Protection Mascot competition will be launched on May 11 and schools will be asked to design and name the mascot; judging will take place at the end of May and a winner announced.

Mrs. Gage-Grey further informed that the mascot will be fine-tuned by a cartoon artist, and that it will go to production in June.

“The mascot will be coupled with the jingle and taken into schools and communities,” she indicated.

The CEO noted that the competitions form part of the major ‘Every Child Deserves Protection Campaign, #ECDP’.

This, she said will comprise three subcampaigns focusing on anti-bullying – ‘Ban the Bullying Campaign, #BTB’; anti-corporal punishment – ‘Positive Discipline. No Spanking Campaign’; and protection of children –‘Protek Wi Pickney Dem Campaign’

Mrs. Gage-Grey noted that these campaigns will run until November 2018.

The CPFSA’s Child Month activities, which are being undertaken in collaboration with a number of entities, also include a national church service on Sunday, May 6 at the William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church in Falmouth, Trelawny, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, May 15, the CPFSA southern team will execute a child protection walk-through in Craighead, Christiana, Manchester, starting at 10:00a.m.

State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green, and Mrs. Gage-Grey will prepare breakfast for the children at the Glenhope Nursery at Maxfield Avenue, with the assistance of one of Jamaica’s top chefs, Jacqui Tyson. This is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16, starting at 8:00 a.m.

The CPFSA will partner with the National Child Month Committee on National Children’s Day, Friday, May 18, which will involve special activities for children at Half-Way Tree, downtown Kingston, and Montego Bay; and a National Day of Prayer and Fasting on Wednesday, May 30 at the May Pen New Testament Church of God from 10:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m.

In addition, a Special Needs and Family Resource Expo will be staged in partnership with the Nathan Ebanks Foundation on Saturday, May 26 at Hope Gardens (East Lawn).

Activities will also involve collaboration with the Jamaica Fire Brigade in its campaign ‘Jamaica’s Future is on Fire… Mek Wi Fix It’, which aims to get children to acknowledge fire-safety practices and extend these to friends and families.

Child Month is being celebrated under the theme AFFIRM. Me. AFFIRM is an acronym for “Acknowledge me, (Be) Friend Me, Favour Me, Influence me positively, Respect Me, and Motivate Me” which emerged out of calls by children for adults to recognise and validate their worth.
