The Full Story

President of the Jamaica Exporters Association (JEA), Mr. Vitus Evans, is optimistic that the export sector can increase its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) from one-fifth to one-third in keeping with the National Export Strategy (NES).
Being implemented by the JEA in association with JAMPRO/Jamaica Trade and Invest (JTI), the NES aims to guide the development of the export industry and achieve the targeted increase in GDP contribution by year 2013.
“We believe that this is achievable, but will take the commitment of each of us (and) the country as a whole, to do all we can to support and build the export sector,” Mr. Evans stated.
He was addressing the JEA awards banquet held yesterday evening (June 9) at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.
Mr. Evans argued that a healthy export sector is pivotal to creating better jobs, facilitating innovation, increasing productivity and enhancing the overall standard of living.
Turning to other matters, the JEA head stressed the need to protect and enhance ‘Brand Jamaica’, while sending a clear message that the country is serious about development.
“We have to let the world know that we are committed to the development of this country. Our message right now is simply that ‘Jamaica is open for business”, Mr. Evans stated.
