Minister of National Security, Derrick Smith, has charged the new Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), Major General Stewart Saunders, to initiate a programme of orientation for JDF soldiers, to improve how they interact with civilians. Minister Smith was speaking at the swearing in ceremony for the new Chief of Staff today (Oct. 26) at King’s House.
He noted that in light of the high crime level in the country, the army will be called upon to interact with the public more frequently. “It is this administration’s intention to seek to have more briefing and training of soldiers as to how to treat civilians. We are relying on you to lead this sort of orientation,” he stated, adding that he looked forward to “an excellent working relationship” with the new Chief of Staff.
Major General Stewart was presented with the instrument of Appointment and conferred with the rank of Major General by Governor-General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth Hall, after taking the Oath of Allegiance in a short ceremony. He succeeds Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, who went on retirement earlier this month after five years in that position.
