JCF to get 150 Vehicles at a Cost of $250 Million

For the 2007/08 fiscal year, at least $250 million will be spent to acquire about 150 vehicles for the security forces, the first 100 of which are to be delivered by August.
Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, who made the announcement during his contribution to the 2007/08 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday (June 13), said that “the ability of the security forces to respond quickly to calls for assistance and to maintain a presence in communities and on our roadways, is critical to the sense of security of the population.”
He noted that “in the past year, we managed to invest some $457 million to bolster the Jamaica Constabulary Force fleet by 188 vehicles of varying types, including some specialized trail bikes for the Island Special Constabulary Force.”
In the meantime, the Minister disclosed that a sum of nearly $400 million was spent on work ranging from minor repairs to major renovations and refurbishment of some 160 police stations across the island.
This fiscal year, another $400 million is earmarked for further work including the completion of the Falmouth Police Station and the construction of new stations in Bath, St. Thomas; Alexandria, St. Ann; Cambridge, St. James and Point Hill, St. Catherine.
“In addition, repairs and upgrading will be done on at least 10 stations across the country,” Dr. Phillips informed.
