JCDC to Stage Several Activities During Heritage Week

August 18, 2009

The Full Story

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will be staging a week of activities across the island to commemorate National Heritage Week, between October 12 and 19, 2009.
Exhibitions, expositions, forums, thanksgiving church services, Heroes Day salute functions and floral tributes to Jamaica’s National Heroes and Heroine are among the activities planned for the week.
This was disclosed by the Executive Director of the JCDC, Delroy Gordon, at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, held today (August 18), at the agency’s head office on Half-Way Tree Road, in Kingston.
“These activities will adopt a multi media approach involving the nation in a week of intense focus on our rich national heritage and its significance,” Mr. Gordon said. He said the organisation was preparing a schedule, which would be published shortly in the media.
Mr. Gordon noted that one of the main objectives of this year’s celebrations was “to revive in citizens a sense of pride and patriotism and to preserve the cultural heritage of the country.” Additionally, he said it was intended to develop in citizens, an action-driven attitude towards national observances and to increase attendance and participation of citizens in Heritage Week celebrations.
Giving details of the activities, the Executive Director said there will be a National Church Service as well as a Heroes Day Salute function at the National Heroes Park, where floral tributes will be paid to the National Heroes.
“These are replicated across the island in town squares where unsung heroes are recognised by the local Parish Committees and tributes are also paid to our National Heroes,” he added.
Mr. Gordon said the JCDC will also be organising cultural activities in schools from the primary to tertiary levels, in an effort to preserve Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
“We will provide a cadre of speakers to go into schools, colleges and institutions and churches, to speak to the significance of National Heritage Week. So, it is going to be educational, it is going to be entertaining and commemorative,” he said.
