JCDC Plans Three-Week Celebration in Honour of Miss Lou

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will be staging a series of activities this month in honour of the late Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley.

Director of Field Services, JCDC, Marjorie Leyden-Vernon, told JIS News that the activities, which will roll out in the parishes next week, will celebrate the life and work of the late cultural icon, affectionately called ‘Miss Lou’.

"We are looking at a series of activities in almost every parish. We will commence on September 13 and go right through to the 29th of September," she informed, stating that details of the events and venues will be published in the press.

She said the JCDC will be working closely with schools, libraries and parish councils to carry out the activities.

"Great plans are underway. We are working closely with the parish librarians and exhibitions are a part of what is being done to highlight the work and life of Miss Lou," she said.

The celebrations will culminate on Saturday, September 29 when the JCDC, in collaboration with the Gordon Town community, will host a special event in the St. Andrew community, were Miss Lou resided.

The event, dubbed: 'Tenky Miss Lou family fun day and concert', will be held at the Gordon Town Square, starting at 10:00 am.

Miss Lou was born in Kingston on September 7, 1919. She passed away in Toronto, Canada on July 26, 2006. This year, she would have celebrated her 93rd birthday.
