The Full Story

Jamaicans are set to benefit from a wide range of rich and innovative business ideas and opportunities, as the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC) stages its sixth annual conference under the theme: ‘Bowling for Business’, at the Jamaica Conference Centre from November 17 to 19.
The conference this year takes on an even more significant role than in previous years, as Jamaicans “bounce back” from the effects of Hurricane Ivan and look forward to the possibilities for business at all levels, particularly with World Cup Cricket 2007 on the horizon.
“We feel that people have been down since the hurricane and we want them to understand that we are here for them, whether small, medium or large enterprises,” Chief Executive Officer of the JBDC, Valerie Veira told JIS News.
“Everybody suffered some form of setback. We are bowling pro-actively for business to return to normal, for expansion and new ideas; that kind of excitement in the development of new businesses,” she added.
This conference will take the form of three major workshops focusing on the Baking Industry, World Cup Cricket 2007 and the Search for New Entrepreneurs, particularly the younger generation.
The JBDC believes that these three areas present excellent opportunities for all levels of entrepreneurship, from the micro to the largest.
Miss Veira said the presentations will be informative, looking into the future and intensifying the search for new entrants into the business sector.
The conference will also focus on important issues, such as the labelling and packaging of Jamaican products, in keeping with international standards.
Through the workshops and demonstrations, it is hoped that the participants’ imagination and creativity will be stimulated to make viable contributions to the economic development of the country. Following is the schedule for the Conference:
Opening Ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 17, 9:30 a.m.
Baking Industry Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
World Cup Cricket 2007 Thursday, Nov. 18, 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon
Search for New Entrepreneurs Thursday, Nov. 18, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The JBDC, an agency under the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, was established in 2000, as one of the premier business support organizations in Jamaica, and is well respected by clients and funding institutions alike.
Since its establishment, the agency has been providing business and technical support services across the spectrum, from guiding business start-ups to a wide range of consultancy services for established businesses.
