January 23, 2008

The Full Story

The Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC), in its continued thrust to facilitate the sustainable development of the micro and small enterprises in Jamaica, will open its sixth Jamaica Business Information Centre (JAMBIC) in Portmore on Thursday (Jan. 24).
The centre, which will be located at Shop 93, Portmore Pines Plaza, will provide information relating to all aspects of doing business in Jamaica from start-up to implementation.
Project Administrator for the JAMBIC project, Althea Bennett, explained that the centre will also offer a “hand holding” approach through the provision of business service advisors, who will mentor and guide new business owners and help to foster new business ideas.
Ms. Bennett noted that the project “is a collaborative effort between the JBDC and various public and private entities to provide entrepreneurs islandwide with business-oriented solutions through the use of technology.”
“We set up the centres with basic equipment like computer, printer, fax machines, which will provide them (new business owners) with the resources they will need to retrieve information,” the Project Administrator informed.
She said a wide range of services are offered at the centres including: business plan development; loan and grant application processing; website design, internet marketing and training; staff development; business consultations and administrative services.
In terms of feedback from the various centres, she noted that “persons appreciate the fact that they do not have to go all over the place to get the basic information that they need.all of it is there in one place like a one-stop-shop, so whatever it is from business registration to referrals, to financial agencies, all of that you can get from the JAMBIC centres,” she pointed out.
The overall aim of the JAMBIC project is to disseminate business information and training to enterprises, by establishing information centres across the island to improve business competitiveness. In addition, the project seeks to strengthen the ability of small entrepreneurs to access technical, business, marketing and financial services that will allow them to begin on a secure financial and technological footing and to continuously upgrade their products and develop efficient linkages with markets.
Other JAMBIC facilities have been established at the JBDC’s head office on Camp Road; the Hanover Chamber of Commerce; Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce; Jamaica Employers Federation; and ‘The Source’ in August Town, which is a collaboration with Jamaica National Building Society.
