JAS Receives $5 Million for Information Technology Project

The Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology yesterday (October 6) presented a cheque for $5 million to the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) to go towards the Society’s Management Information Systems Project. The presentation was made at a post board meeting press conference held at the JAS headquarters on Church Street.
President of the JAS, Senator Norman Grant explained that the donation had resulted from the Memorandum of Agreement that was signed between the Government of Jamaica and the JAS on June 10 of this year, in which the government had endorsed the Society’s Management Information Systems Project.
The Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology is responsible for formalizing the disbursement of the funds and implementing the Information Technology Plan.
In his statement, Minister Phillip Paulwell said, “Information Technology is an infrastructure that all other sectors, such as education, health, manufacturing and the farming community need to utilize in order to become more efficient.”
Mr. Paulwell noted that his Ministry was therefore very pleased to present the JAS with the funds to establish the Information Technology project to assist in making the agricultural sector more efficient.
The project will facilitate the redevelopment and expansion of the Society’s website, as well as equip all its parish offices with computers, enabling Internet access. Farmers will also be able to utilize the service to assist them in their production activities through the procurement and sharing of information.
