The Full Story

President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Senator Norman Grant, has congratulated the St. Ann Association of Branch Societies for the “tremendous work” they have been doing as a farmers’ lobby group, catering to the needs and interest of communities in the parish.
“Although the agricultural sector in general has been experiencing different kinds of setbacks and constraints from the continued drought and bush fires in some areas, it is clear that the farmers in St. Ann are a resilient and determined group of people, who have the will to persist and make the best of their noble occupation,” Senator Grant said.
He was speaking at the annual general meeting of the Association, which was held on May 18 at the Brown’s Town Anglican Church Hall in St. Ann.
Senator Grant said that with the launching of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) recently, farmers in Jamaica should benefit immensely, as the JAS has been working assiduously towards re-positioning the agricultural sector in the country.
“It is time to prepare ourselves for the major challenges that are ahead. Let us note that we will be hosting the World Cup Cricket 2007 as a region and whether we are ready or not, this event will provide an opportunity to introduce our unique Jamaican products to the many tourists who will come to our shores,” he said.
The President informed that the Farmers’ Power Breakfast, scheduled for Friday, May 20, would speak directly to issues concerning the CSME and the farmers, and that it would be the beginning of a process of educating farming communities and the public.
“The JAS will also be venturing on a major education campaign on the praedial larceny initiative and sensitize the public on the new Bill and its impact on farmers,” he said.
Senator Grant urged farmers to register with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and identify themselves as legitimate farmers who have been contributing to the development of the society.
