Jamalco Trucks Water to Schools

Children and teachers at several schools close to Jamalco’s operations in Manchester and Clarendon have been finding it easier to focus on learning and teaching, because of the regular supply of water to their school tanks.
On a monthly basis, since the onset of the current drought, Jamalco has been providing just under half a million gallons of trucked water to over 20 schools and 10 communities in its operating areas.
Principal of Pratville Primary School, South Manchester, Valda Buckle, noted that the water supplied by Jamalco, during the extended drought, has allowed the school to remain open.
“We are truly grateful for their support. Jamalco has surpassed our expectations,” she said.
The schools being assisted are located, largely, in Jamalco’s host communities in Harmons Valley and Mocho in Clarendon and in the Manningsfield area of South Manchester. The company has been providing the commodity from its own wells and from the public water supply system, at a cost of just under $1 million, monthly.
Community Relations Officer at Jamalco, Natale Irving, noted that, over the years, the company has trucked water when required, because it allows the children to remain at school and complete their curriculum without disruption because there is no water.
The company also provides trucked water to health centres and hospitals in host communities in both parishes, when the need arises.
