Jamalco Supports Breast Cancer Screening in South Manchester

November 25, 2009

The Full Story

About 30 women from communities in South Manchester have been screened for breast cancer, and have also received information on the disease.
The screening and awareness session was organised by Jamalco, in collaboration with the Jamaica Cancer Society, the National Health Fund (NHF) and Jamalco’s rehabilitation contractor, RECO Limited, and was held at the Winston Jones High School.
Each person received a mammogram (an x-ray of the breasts) from the cancer society, using its mobile unit.
Radiographer Yvonne Watson, who did the x-rays, reminded the women of the importance of examining their breasts regularly for early detection, as this was the best way to fight the disease which is a leading cause of death among Jamaican women.
Vashti Small, a resident of the Asian community, was grateful for the opportunity.
“Thanks for assisting the older members of the community with their mammogram, as it is very expensive and a number of us are doing this for the first time,” she said.
The company organised the screening as part of its initiatives to improve the quality of life for persons living in its host communities.
