Jamaicans Urged To Reflect On Lives And Contributions Of National Heroes

Director of Administration at the St. Catherine Parish Council, Franklyn Smith, has called on Jamaicans to reflect on the lives and contributions made by the National Heroes, so they can be inspired to improve the country and remove “the shackles of divisiveness”.
“What we are being challenged by each of them to do, is to become the kind of person that they became,” he said, noting that the Heroes took up the challenge to transform the country in every possible way they could.
Mr. Smith was speaking yesterday (October 15), at a floral tribute to the National Heroes, at the Philippo Baptist Church in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.
Those laying flowers were, Custos of St. Catherine, Rev. Sophia Azan, and Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Raymoth Notice.
The ceremony, organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) under the theme, ‘Embracing Our Heritage …Out of Many One People’, is one of several events planned to recognise the contributions of Jamaica’s National Heroes.
Mr. Smith told the gathering that the National Heroes did not “roll over and die”, when they were confronted with challenges, adding that their struggles had ensured that Jamaicans would have access to education, that they could vote, and that they would enjoy political, religious and social freedom.
Also attending the ceremony were teachers and students from schools in Spanish Town. The St. Catherine High School Choir rendered two patriotic songs.
