Jamaicans in Toronto to Welcome New High Commissioner

Jamaicans in Toronto will officially welcome High Commissioner to Canada, Evadne Coye, at a reception to be held tomorrow (March 29) at the Jamaican Canadian Association Centre.
Representatives of Jamaican community organizations and government agencies are expected to attend the event.
High Commissioner Coye, who succeeded Carl Marshall, assumed duties on January 22. The career diplomat brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having served in several of Jamaica’s overseas missions since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in 1975.
For the past five years, she was Jamaica’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, and while resident in Brussels, also served as non-resident Ambassador to France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, as well as High Commissioner to Botswana and South Africa. Mrs. Coye has also served as the resident Ambassador to Mexico while being accredited to Belize, Central America and Panama, and was Jamaica’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C.
In Kingston, High Commissioner Coye held several positions at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, including Senior Officer for the Caribbean and Americas Department; Senior Officer for Africa, Asia and the Middle East; Deputy Director for the Political Division; and Under-Secretary for Bilateral and Western Hemisphere Relations.
While in Toronto, the High Commissioner will pay courtesy calls on several Canadian government officials including Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, Hon. James K. Bartleman; Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Hon. Mike Colle; and Ontario Minister of Children and Youth Services Hon. MaryAnne Chambers. She will also meet with members of the Jamaican Diaspora Canada Foundation, Jamaican Liaison Service and tour operators.
