Jamaicans in South Florida Celebrate 47 Years of Independence

Several activities and events are scheduled as Jamaicans in South Florida USA, get ready to celebrate the nation’s 47th anniversary of Independence.
Minister of Finance, Hon. Audley Shaw, is the scheduled guest speaker at this Sunday’s (July 26) annual gospel extravaganza hosted by the Kendall Community Church of God under the theme: ‘Unity Through Independence’.
Also on that day, Jamaicans in the Catholic mission will stage their annual Independence mass at Our Lady of the Lourdes Catholic Church in Miami. Proceeds from that service will benefit the Missionaries of the Poor.
On Friday, July 31, South Florida’s public radio station (WLRN FM), will feature the nation’s history and its accomplishments in its weekly mid-day special called ‘South Florida Arts Beat’.
Hosted by veteran radio journalist, Ed Bell, the programme will also pay tribute to the many Jamaicans across the Diaspora, who have made a positive impact individually and collectively.
On Saturday, August 1 Jamaican nationals will be treated to an evening of entertainment at an ‘Old Time Street Dance’ reminiscent of the island’s celebration of Independence, to be held at the Truck Stop outdoor venue in Davie.
The annual ecumenical service hosted by the Jamaican Consulate General in Miami, will be held on Sunday (Aug. 2) at the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Al Miller of the Fellowship Tabernacle in Kingston, who will base his sermon on the Independence theme: ‘I Believe in Jamaica’.
Nationals and friends have been invited to participate in an evening of fellowship, which will feature performances by the 100-voice South Florida Caribbean Chorale, made up of choristers from several predominant Jamaican congregations in South Florida communities; the children’s choir from the Sierra Norwood Calvary Baptist Church; as well as the Jamaica Folk Revue.
As is customary, the community reception, hosted by the staff of the Consulate, will follow the service, with the proceeds to benefit HIV/AIDS charities in Jamaica.
Jamaicans will continue celebrations with a variety of festivities at local venues across the Florida State. These will include art shows, cultural festivals, concerts and community church services.
