The Full Story

Fourteen Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals were honoured recently in Huddersfield, in the north of England, at a special awards ceremony, held to recognise local heroes and heroines as part of celebrations to mark Black History Month and the 20th anniversary of the Jamaica National Council (Huddersfield)
High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), His Excellency Anthony Johnson who was special guest at the ceremony, congratulated the awardees, and commended them for the contributions they have made in building their local communities. “You have all done well and deserved to be recognized,” he said.
The awards ceremony, hosted by the Jamaica National Council (Huddersfield) and the Shabach Outreach Ministries, gave the community an opportunity to recognise local members who have given voluntary service to the Borough of Kirklees (where Huddersfield is located).

High Commissioner Johnson lauded the community for keeping the Diaspora together and urged them to keep their Jamaican heritage alive for the second and third generations. He also encouraged them to invest in businesses, so that they can be independent and continue to support Jamaica.
It was High Commissioner Johnson’s first official visit to Huddersfield and he and his wife Pamela were given a red carpet welcome, with local school children singing Jamaica’s National Anthem.
During his visit the High Commissioner also met with the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Andrew Palfreeman, at which he proposed the possibility of developing projects between Huddersfield and Jamaica. The Mayor was receptive to the idea and promised to have his International Relations team examine the possibilities.
