More Jamaicans Expected to be Employed

More Jamaicans are expected to be employed within the short to medium term, according to a survey being conducted by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Planning, Research and Monitoring Unit.

The key findings for the National Labour Market Survey highlighted in the Ministry’s Annual Performance Report 2016/17, which has been tabled in the House, show that of the 660 employers who participated, 65 per cent of firms are projected to hire more staff.

The greatest demand will be for skilled workers in the production and services category, with 72 per cent of employers indicating a need for this group.

Some 45 per cent of employers plan to hire professional and technical workers, 37 per cent require managerial staff, while 30 per cent want unskilled workers in production and services.

The key findings also show that the main jobs that will be provided in the short term include technical workers, managers, sales and marketing workers, customer service representatives, accounting workers, supervisors, administrative assistants, culinary workers and engineers.
