The Full Story

Jamaican Author, Kellie Magnus, signed copies of her first children’s book Little Lion Goes to School last Friday evening (October 24) at the Jamaican Consulate in New York. Accompanying her was Michael Robinson, the book’s illustrator.
After a lively reading of the book, Ms. Magnus shared her vision behind Little Lion. “I wanted to create a character that Caribbean children could relate to and look up to. Caribbean children, whether in the region or the Diaspora, need to have their own characters that they can identify with; characters that convey positive values and Caribbean traditions,” Ms. Magnus stated.
Dr. Basil K. Bryan, Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, congratulated Ms. Magnus on her latest accomplishment. “We are immensely proud of you and Mr. Robinson as your work is an indication of the enormous reserve of talent and potential that we have as a people,” the Consul General said.
“The wholesome message as illustrated by Little Lion’s story is an important and timeless one that we must pass on to future generations,” Dr. Bryan added.
The book chronicles the heartwarming tale of Little Lion, a Rastafarian boy who, while trying to fit in at his new school, is made fun of for being poor and for his non-traditional appearance. After receiving encouragement from his father, Little Lion comes to realize that it is who he is, not what he possesses, that determines worth and character.
Daughter of radio personality, Allan Magnus, Kellie is a graduate of Campion College, Harvard University (USA) and Columbia University (USA). She is currently a Director with Media Magic New York, a marketing and consulting firm that provides services for companies and artists in the Caribbean-American market.
She is also a member of Jamaica Impact Organization (JAMPACT) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Harlem Youth Soccer Association in New York City.Michael Robinson works in several media – painting, sculpture and computer generated imagery. His work has been shown in the Caribbean and Japan. Aside from his work as an artist, Mr. Robinson is a graphic designer at the Jamaica Business Development Centre. The books are available in the United States at www.Amazon.com.
