Jamaica wins multiple awards at World Travel Awards in London

Jamaica’s tourist sector was a big winner at the 2010 World Travel Awards in London Monday night, winning some 14 awards, including Leading Caribbean Destination, Leading Cruise Destination and Leading Cruise Port.
Jamaica picked up awards for Leading Airport – Sangster International; Leading Tourist Bard – the Jamaica Tourist Board; and Leading Meeting and Conference facility; the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.
The island also won for Leading Adventure Excursion- Chukka Caribbean Adventures; Leading Boutique – Jakes Island; Leading Family Resort, Beaches Negril ; Leading Brand, Sandals International; Leading Luxury Villa, the Fleming Villa at Golden Eye; leading excursion, Dunn’s River Falls; Caribbean Leading Villa, Round Hill; and Leading Travel Agency, Trafalgar Travel.
Minister of Transport and World, Hon Mike Henry, who accepted the award for Leading Cruise Port, congratulated the Port Authority if Jamaica for its work in maintaining high standards for the ports of Jamaica.
He told JIS news that the award was a boost to the sector, as it comes only a few months before the official opening of the new cruise port in Falmouth. The port will be officially opened in March next year, and will receive a visit from the world largest cruise ship, the Genesis, in April.
Mr. Henry said that some US$120 million was invested in developing the Port of Falmouth, and that US$40 million will be spent in upgrading other ports. He said that cruise shipping in Jamaica was looking up, and that last week the island had six cruise ship calls.
