Jamaica to Benefit From New Venture in Health Tourism

December 2, 2007

The Full Story

Discussions are now well advanced with a Spanish company for the establishment in Montego Bay, of a new venture in health tourism. This new venture will offer exciting new prospects for Jamaica, according to Prime Minister Hon. Bruce Golding.
Addressing the official opening ceremony of the new 5-star resort facility, Iberostar Rose Hall Beach hotel this afternoon (Dec 1) , Mr Golding noted that Jamaica could benefit tremendously from this fast growing multi-billion dollar business. He said an increasing numbers of persons were travelling overseas for medical procedures and convalescence treatment in their search to escape the staggering cost of medical treatment in North America and Europe. This business he said, generates close to US$40-billion in expenditure and that Jamaica is ideally suited- both geographically and climatically- to tap into this emerging growth centre.
There are other exciting new developments planned for Montego Bay that will enhance the tourism capital’s image as a preferred tourism destination, Mr Golding said. These developments are to take place within what he described as the ‘elegant corridor’ of Rose Hall.
The strategy behind these developments and plans Mr Golding said is designed to increase Jamaica’s penetration into the higher end of the tourism market where more value can be added and more jobs per room created. This would also expand the menu of leisure options offered to the visitor, he said.
