Jamaica recorded a murder-free day on Sunday, June 8.
This was revealed by Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Area Five Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Christopher Phillips, who indicated that the organisation is celebrating this major achievement.
He made the disclosure during a thanksgiving service at the Spanish Town Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Catherine on Monday, June 9, while paying tribute to nine-year-old Kelsey Ferrigon, who was brutally murdered on May 9. She was laid to rest following the service.
Jamaica has been seeing a consistent decline in the homicide rate since 2023, when the figure fell by 7.3 per cent. Last year, murders declined by 18.4 per cent.
The JCF’s latest statistics indicate that 289 people were killed between January 1 and June 7, 2025.
A total of 517 people lost their lives during the same period in 2024, reflecting a 44.1 per cent decline.
The decline was welcomed by Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, in her remarks during the service.
She pointed out that murders have also fallen by 34 per cent in Area Five, while noting that it is “amazing to hear those numbers in Spanish Town”.
The Information Minister expressed appreciation to the JCF officers attending the service and the wider membership, emphasising their contributions to Jamaica’s declining violent crime rate.
