The Jamaica Productivity Centre (JPC) is observing National Productivity Awareness Week (NPAW) under the theme: ‘Enhancing Living through Productivity Growth.’
The five days of observances, which got underway on (Nov.19) is part of the JPC’s communications and advocacy strategy and will seek to effectively disseminate information to increase productivity.
According to Executive Director of the JPC, Dr. Charles Douglas, the overall goals of the National Productivity Awareness Week is to “foster a productivity culture among Jamaicans through public education and sensitization as well as train public and private sector managers in practical aspects of productivity measurement and benchmarking.”
The highlight of the week is a two-day Company Productivity Measurement Workshop, which got underway today (Nov. 20) at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston. The event targets private and public sector decision makers in addition to students, lecturers, and researchers.
Presenters include the immediate past Director-General of the National Productivity Corporation (NPC) of Malaysia, Mah Lok Abdullah; Chief Programme Manager of Research and Business Development Services at the Barbados National Productivity Council, Anthony Sobers; and Dr. Douglas.
A number of the workshop sessions will explore the role of labour management cooperation, productivity measurement and benchmarking tools for enterprise improvement, and competitiveness. These areas are deemed critical if Jamaica is to increase its productivity rate.
According to Dr. Douglas “productivity must become a mass movement and given high priority on the national agenda,” noting that Jamaica has been lagging behind other countries, both developed and developing, in its use of productivity indicators to guide policies aimed at improving living standards.
Noting that the level of distrust between workers and management in Jamaican companies has also been identified as a factor influencing worker motivation and productivity, he said that “providing supportive work environments as well as challenging work are critical elements in improving labour motivation and productivity.”
“The management of organisations and labour unions must pay increasing attention to continuous training and retraining; improve the physical work environment; promote productivity-linked compensation and operations management systems and interpersonal relations in the workplace, if labour productivity is to be enhanced and sustained,” the Executive Director further pointed out.
As to the expected outcomes of the week, Dr. Douglas told JIS News that these are to: increase the awareness of the population regarding the benefits of productivity growth to individuals, firms, industries, sectors and the national economy; motivate firms and organizations to measure productivity and utilize the measurements to guide productivity improvement efforts; and encourage firms, organizations and trade unions to seriously consider the broad elements that must constitute any well conceived productivity-based compensation system (PBCS).
The JPC is a tripartite organization comprising the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) and the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF). Its mandate is to serve as the catalyst for promoting and facilitating productivity improvement at the national, sector, industry, enterprise and individual levels.
