The Government of Jamaica has named five representatives to the Joint Committee of the Jamaica/South Africa Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation.

In 2013, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, on behalf of the Government of Jamaica signed the Jamaica/South Africa Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, which will promote and support cooperation in science and technology.

The Agreement will include the exchange of scientists, researchers, technical experts and scholars, as well as the formulation and implementation of joint research and development programmes.

Minister Paulwell has said the Agreement will enhance Jamaica’s intellectual capacity in science and technology. This Agreement, he said, is mutually beneficial and will improve our international competitiveness, as well as support our nations’ progress towards an innovation-based economy.

The High Commissioner of Jamaica, H.E. Norma Taylor Roberts, and South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Derek Hanekom, have acknowledged the potential of the Agreement as a means of building on the long-standing bonds of friendship by establishing tangible areas of cooperation for the promotion of national development.
Jamaica will be represented on the Joint Committee by:

  • Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa Deputy Principal and former Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of the West Indies
  • Dr. Debbie-Ann Gordon-Smith Director, Centre for Science-based Research, Entrepreneurship and Continuing Studies (CSRECS) University of Technology
  • Mrs. Ann Marie Smith Manager, Product Research and Development Division, Scientific Research Council
  • Mr. Donald Miller Research Officer, National Commission on Science and Technology
  • Wahkeen Murray Chief Technical Director ICT, Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining

The composition of the South African delegation will include 2 or 3 delegates from the Overseas Bilateral Cooperation Directorate most likely to be led by Ms Vinny Pillay, Chief Director, Overseas Bilateral Cooperation.
