February 27, 2012

The Full Story

Jamaica will commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Opening for Signature of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, with a series of events throughout the year.

A symposium and ceremony to launch the activities will take place on Wednesday (February 29) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston. The event, which will get underway at 9:00 a.m., is being organised by the Government of Jamaica in collaboration with the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator A.J. Nicholson, and Secretary-General of the ISA, Nii Odunton, are expected to speak at the opening ceremony. Other invitees include representatives of Permanent Missions of the ISA; members of the National Council on Ocean and Coastal Zone Management; and representatives of academic institutions.

The symposium, to follow, will address a number of topics, including: ‘Achievements of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea’; ‘Functions and roles of the ISA’; and ‘Marine Scientific Research – the International Seabed Authority’s Endowment Fund’.

Presenters are Mr. Odunton; Deputy Secretary General of the ISA, Michael Lodge; and Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 30th Anniversary Commemorative Activities, Coy Roache.

The Convention on the Law of the Sea, which serves as the legal framework governing the ocean, was opened for signature in Montego Bay on December 10, 1982.

The launch and symposium are among a number of activities to be held throughout the year to mark the milestone and highlight the significance of the Convention to Jamaica and the wider international community.
