Jamaica Honoured Among the Few

Jamaica was among the 13 countries, in addition to the United Kingdom (UK), which were listed among ‘The Few’ and whose flags were flown during one of the major public events being held in London this week to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Jamaica and South Africa are among the 13 countries, in addition to the United Kingdom, that have been listed among ‘The Few’ and whose flags were flown during one of the major public events being held in London this week to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The special ceremony was attended by High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Anthony Johnson.
During the unveiling of the statue of Battle of Britain hero , Sir Keith Park, it was noted that a Jamaican was among the 2,960 pilots from 14 countries who fought to defend the UK in the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Sir Keith Park commanded the Royal Air Force (RAF) 11 Group Fighter Command – the squadrons which bore the brunt of the Battle of Britain. The failure of Nazi Germany to defeat the RAF in 1940 was seen as Hitler’s first major setback, and one which forced him to call off his planned invasion of Britain.
