Jamaica Fire Brigade to Move into Unoccupied CSO Offices on South Camp Road

June 9, 2009

The Full Story

Plans for the relocation of the Jamaica Fire Brigade’s (JFB) administrative headquarters from downtown Kingston to Half Way Tree next month have been changed, disclosed State Minister with Responsibility for Local Government in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Robert Montague.
The JFB’s central operations are, instead, expected to move into unoccupied offices at the Central Sorting Office (CSO) building on South Camp Road, he said.
Citing satisfaction with the alternative location, Mr. Montague said work at South Camp Road is expected to be completed “in short order”, to facilitate the JFB’s relocation as soon as possible thereafter.
Earlier this year, Mr. Montague advised that the JFB’s central operations were slated to be relocated from the International Seabed Authority (ISA) at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston, to offices earmarked at 2 Hagley Park Road in Half Way Tree, which were previously occupied by the Ministry of Water and Housing. The JFB has been searching for a new location, since being served notice to vacate its current offices.
The State Minister told JIS News, however, that consequent on instructions by Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, that the Ministry of Water and Housing, which currently occupies offices at The Towers business complex in New Kingston, return to Hagley Park Road, the Department of Local Government and JFB were forced to find an alternative location. The Prime Minister had issued the instructions during his Budget Debate presentation in Parliament in May.
The offices at Hagley Park Road housed the Ministry of Construction during the 1980’s when Mr. Golding held portfolio responsibility for the Ministry.
Mr. Montague said that several unoccupied offices were identified at the Central Sorting Office (CSO) building on South Camp Road, adding that both he and the Prime Minister discussed the matter prior to the announcement in Parliament.
“We had discussions with the Prime Minister; as a matter of fact, he was the person who identified the (CSO) building. They (CSO) have two empty floors, and we are currently looking at retrofitting those. My technical staff is now doing the designs to retrofit the building,” Mr. Montague informed.
