The Jamaica Diaspora United Kingdom (UK) has congratulated the members of the Jamaica Special Olympic team, following their successful showing at the just concluded Special Olympics World Winter Games.
The 18-member team won a total of five medals, comprising two gold, one silver and two bronze, at the games held in Idaho in the United States from February 7 -13.
“The Jamaica Diaspora UK extends heartiest congratulations to members of Jamaica’s Special Olympics team, who once again highlighted the extraordinary talents of our people, at the recently concluded Special Olympics World Winter Games. The team showed tenacity, commitment and drive in their overall performance,” the group said in a statement.
Jamaica Diaspora UK Board member, Celia Grandison-Markey, told JIS News that the athletes, through their performance, have once again demonstrated that Jamaica could compete with the world’s best.
“Though we are small in size, we can compete with the best at the international level. The achievements of these Special Olympians will serve to rebut the negative images portrayed about Jamaica in the media especially here in the United Kingdom. In fact, they are role models for all of us, especially for our young people,” she added.
She assured that the Jamaican Diaspora UK would continue to give support to the needs of the Special Olympians, in keeping with its commitment to assist in Jamaica’s development.
