Jamaica Appoints Disaster Recovery Co-Ordinator

Lieutenant Commander Paul Wright has been appointed as the country’s Disaster Recovery Co-ordinator.

This was disclosed by Minister of State with responsibility for Special Projects and Assignments in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Luther Buchanan on Wednesday, May 29, during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.

“His substantive task is to promote partnerships, have consultations, co-ordination of activities and collaborations across entities, groups, the Government and other key local and overseas stakeholders. These are inclusive of individuals and organisations impacted by Hurricane Sandy with a view to facilitating a successful recovery,” Mr. Buchanan said.

Lieutenant Commander Wright was the Director of the Caribbean Disaster Relief Unit over the period 2009 to 2010. He is also head of the Recovery Secretariat of the Hurricane Sandy Recovery Project based at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).

The Secretariat provides information on funding and actions implemented as part of the recovery process.

Giving an update on the rebuilding of houses for Hurricane Sandy victims in St. Mary, Mr. Buchanan informed that some residents will be relocated to other areas.

“For example, 48 families from Port Arthur Lane in Annotto Bay are to be relocated to Crooked River in Annotto Bay and Eden Park in Oracabessa,” he stated.

He informed that the Crooked River site is ready for building and will house 23 of the 48 families. He said that a feasibility study of Eden Park has been completed and is awaiting ratification, after which, site preparation will commence.

Mr. Buchanan told the House that there are 331 households in need of assistance as a result of the passage of Hurricane Sandy, in addition to farmers and fishers, who are yet to recover and schools, which are still in need of repair.
