The Full Story

The Government has identified several investment opportunities arising from its promotional activities during the recent London Olympics that it will be pursuing.

Addressing a post-Olympics press briefing on August 8 at Jamaica House,  Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Anthony Hylton, said that over the 10-day period, when the country staged ‘Jamaica House 2012’ in London, a total of 13 investment leads were made and are being actively pursued by the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO).

Three of these are in clothing manufacturing; import of Jamaican drink/food products into the United Kingdom (UK); and contract manufacturing of a juice product.

JAMPRO is also pursuing nine leads in light manufacturing, distribution of liquid cleaning solutions, furniture manufacturing, medical/wellness resorts, waste-to-energy, manufacturing/assembly of speed boats, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

Minister Hylton also reported that there were expressions of interest by three top global outsourcing companies, which are considering Jamaica as a location to expand their business.

"The JAMPRO London Office will be working with these companies at a follow-up outsourcing seminar to be hosted in a few weeks time at the Jamaican High Commission, where additional details regarding opportunities in Jamaica’s outsourcing sector will be presented,” the Minister said.

He pointed out that going into the Olympics, “we knew that the energy directed towards Jamaica would be nothing short of phenomenal, and that the eyes of the world would be on us. At home and in the Diaspora, we all knew that this was going to be a very important year for Jamaica."

He said that the promotional team went in “fixated on capitalizing on every opportunity to convert business interest into tangible investments and trade deals to the economic benefit of the country."

Minister Hylton also revealed that the country was able to showcase its achievements in film, fashion and music to a big gathering of investors and that coming out of the Creative Industries Day at Jamaica House, a “major global awards show” is actively considering Jamaica as a location.
