Institute of Jamaica Stages Grand Fair May 4

May 4, 2012

The Full Story

The Institute of Jamaica will be staging a Grand Fair on Friday, May 4, at its Downtown Kingston location, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Deputy Director at the Institute of Jamaica, Gillian Corrodus, informed that the event forms part of the activities to mark Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence, and will focus on reviving all aspects of the Jamaican culture, thus creating awareness.

“The essence of the fair will basically feature both the tangible and intangible heritage of Jamaica, which will enable persons to view a variety of objects that will be displayed. They will also be given a tour of the facility, while being educated about the historical legacy of Jamaica,” she said.

Some of the historical elements that will be displayed are: authentic Jamaican music, the history of the Jamaican people, specimens of endemic plants and animals, craft items, traditional food, as well as exhibits featuring the First and Second World Wars.

Mrs. Corrodus told JIS News that, with the staging of the fair, the Institute is aiming to increase the awareness of the Jamaican cultural heritage, so persons can show greater appreciation of its worth.

“There is no better time to embark on such an initiative, than in Jamaica’s 50th year of independence, where persons can come and share in our Jamaica experience, and be educated and inspired about our rich, cultural heritage,” she noted.

Some of the highlights of the event include: a lunch hour concert, featuring performances by singer, Wayne Marshall; National Folk Group for the Blind, children’s activities, and cultural exhibitions.

“We really want to provide an authentic experience for all Jamaicans islandwide. We are encouraging some of the post secondary youth to come out and embrace our Jamaican culture, and value our museums as part of edutainment, since they comprise some of our most significant legacies,” she pointed out.

She also said that the event seeks to encourage adults to rediscover some of the historical elements that they were exposed to as children, such as cultural foods, so that they can readily pass on the information to their children.

Some of the sponsors of the event include: the Gleaner Company, LIME, Carlong Publishers, the Coconut Industry Board, Jamaica Biscuit Company, Crazy Jim, National Commercial Bank (NCB), Novelty Traders, Forestry Department, and the Ministry of Youth and Culture.
