Institute of Jamaica gives free passes to children for all Workers’ Week exhibitions and events

Kingston, May 14, 2010 – The Institute of Jamaica, an agency of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, will waive entry fees for children visiting its museums and other exhibitions at all locations during Workers’ Week scheduled for May 16 to 24.
The Institute of Jamaica, in giving support to the 2010 Worker’s Week/Labour Day commemorations, will host several activities across its divisions.
The activities will focus on the evolution of the workers’ movement in Jamaica arising from the protests of 1938; and will engage with children in keeping with the theme of this year’s commemoration – “Our Children…Show Them We Care”.
The activities:IOJ will host a function honouring children and caregivers, featuring Mamma Joy who has, for the past forty years, given distinguished service to the needs of children in the communities surrounding the IOJ complex Downtown, Kingston.The National Library of Jamaica will mount an on-line exhibition from May 16 to 31. The exhibition will focus on National Hero the Rt. Excellent Sam Sharpe as well as the rise of the labour movement in Jamaica. The exhibition will be accessible through the website www.nlj.gov.jm.African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica/Jamaica Memory Bank will host an audio exhibition from May 17 to 28 in its library. Visitors to the library will be able to listen to the voices of persons who were either involved with or witnesses to the events of 1938.The IOJ Junior Centres will coordinate an art programme for the children in the surrounding community. This special week of activities will engage the children in creating art around the theme of Workers’ Week and will involve a mentoring programme with an established artist, a tour of the National Gallery of Jamaica and an exhibition and sale of the children’s art at the end of the week at the IOJ.The National Gallery of Jamaica will showcase young artists through Young Talent 5. This programme will feature the work of 14 young artists and will include a series of events involving children and youth during the month of May. These events will include a panel discussion. The gallery will also conduct tours of its exhibitions for children during the period.Liberty Hall.the Legacy of Marcus Garvey will mount an exhibition on the national hero and his impact on the workforce during the period 1927 to 1935. Liberty Hall will also screen a film about the 1938 labour uprising followed by rap session with Mr. Frank Gordon on May 21.The Museums of History and Ethnography will mount an exhibition entitled ‘Other People, Other Cultures’ during the month of May. On May 20 the division will host an open house featuring puppeteer Jean Small. The People’s Museum of Craft and Technology will also run an exhibition on the tools and machinery used in the workplace over the history of Jamaica.
