Input Project for Farmers Receives $49 Million

The Input Supplies Project (ALBA Food Initiative) has been allotted $49 million in the 2012/13 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

The project aims to improve production and productivity in the agricultural sector through the provision of critical inputs, such as high quality seeds and other planting material, fertilizer, farm tools and small machinery.

It is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries with funding from the ALBA Bank-Venezuela.

Achievement up to February 2012 include: procurement of seeds and other planting material, fertilizer, chemicals, small tools for farmers in 742 Production and Marketing Organisations (PMOs); procurement of feeds and livestock such as chickens, goats, pigs and rabbits for selected PMOs; and four rubber-wheel tractors and eight hand tractors with implements procured.

For the 2012/2013financial year, it is envisaged that the project will procure and distribute small tools and equipment to PMOs; continue farmer training programme; support the production of turmeric and ginger, as well as the coffee berry borer programme; engage a consultant to design a model abattoir; and conduct an ex-post evaluation of the project.

Originally slated to last from April 2010 to March 2012, the project has been extended to December 2012.
