Infrastructural Projects in Falmouth and Ocho Rios

Residents and other stakeholders of Falmouth, Trelawny; and Ocho Rios, St. Ann, stand to benefit significantly from several infrastructural developments being undertaken in those resort towns, which are at various stages of implementation or completion.

Among these, according to Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, are construction of the $300-million Bend-Down Market in Falmouth, and the Fisherman’s Complex in Ocho Rios, which are slated to be officially opened in April.

Mr. Holness provided details of the projects during his 2018/19 Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (March 20).

He said other developments in Falmouth include a new craft market being constructed to replace the ‘blue tarpaulin’ vendors arcade, slated for completion in July; renovation of Water Square in the town’s centre, and construction of the Hampden Wharf artisan village complex and new green space development for the Falmouth Port terminal, now under way; and expanded introduction of pedicab services in April, following a successful pilot.

The Prime Minister said he is “particularly proud” of the work being spearheaded by the Government in the historic town to “develop an authentic product by including the people”.

“The local people must benefit from tourism, but there must be order, seamlessness and security. I believe we are striking this sustainable equilibrium in the town,” he added.

Other developments under way in Ocho Rios that Mr. Holness highlighted include the Reynolds Pier development, which entails waterside construction, inclusive of repairs to existing pipes, and the installation of new breasting dolphins (marine structures for berthing and mooring of sea vessels), which are slated for completion in April.

Mr. Holness also disclosed that there is “serious and significant” investor interest in developing the Ocho Rios cruise-shipping pier, adding that “great things are in store” for the town.
