As the saying goes: a carpenter never goes to work without his tools. The same should be applied for children heading to school. Without the necessary tools, you will not be able to get your work done.

In preparation for the new school year, you have to focus on the items you’ll place in your school bag.

In an effort to stick to a “less is more” approach for the weight of your bag, you cannot forget some essential items.

Consider these items:

Hand sanitiser
As you go about your days across your school grounds, you will most definitely touch a number of unsanitary surfaces. You won’t always be able to go to the restroom to properly wash your hands so a bottle of hand sanitiser will work wonders.

Pencil case
Pencil cases hold the much smaller essential tools you need to be an efficient student. Remember to put pencils, pens, highlighters, rulers, erasers, sharpeners, calculator, and all other stationery that you will need.

Some may say that keeping notebooks goes without saying but it is still an important tool to have in your bag. Without notebooks, you won’t be able to make your notes – so always have at least one notebook handy.

Yearly Planner
At the start of the new school year, teachers tend to issue a structured time table of classes to their students. Using a yearly planner will assist you in organising your time at school and at home. You will be able to properly plan when you study, when you complete your tasks

Textbooks can be bulky and heavy. However, you don’t need to take them all at once! Based on your time table, pack the relevant text books in your bag. If the book(s) turn out to be unbearably heavy, you can make copies of the chapters to be covered and walk with those instead. Speak with your teachers and plan ahead. This way, you will still be prepared for class.

School ID
It’s a good idea to keep your school ID with you at all times.

The money that you take to school shouldn’t be hanging around loosely. A wallet/purse is the perfect way for you to keep and organise your money. Your school ID can be stored in it as well.

Reusable bottle
As we continue to encourage the use of reusable products, a water bottle of that nature works. If you do not take an igloo to school, a reusable bottle is perfect. It limits the tendency to produce more garbage and you can fill it with water or any juices that you may have throughout the day.

Umbrella and raincoat

Be ready for rainy days and days with extreme heat!

Small bag for personal items
Girls tend to use these more than boys do. However, a small kit with personal items is a must have for your school bag. Inside, you should keep your medication, personal hygiene products, tissue and your hand sanitiser could be kept here as well.

Bear in mind that you have to be consistent with packing these essentials in your bag. Some of these items will need to be replenished at some point and you must keep track as you strive to be an efficient student for the academic year.
