International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The Full Story

The observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVAW) raises public awareness of violence against women. It has been observed on November 25 each year since 2000.

Annually, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport hosts a series of public events aimed at promoting healthy gender relations and raising awareness about violence against women and domestic violence.

These activities also facilitate the sharing of information on the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence and on resources available for those affected.

Victims may report cases of violence and abuse to the Jamaica Constabulary Force. They may also seek help through public bodies, such as the Bureau of Gender Affairs, which is part of a network of support systems available to them. This network also includes centres that provide victims with counselling, refuge and other psycho-social services. Others provide medical services and legal representation, where necessary.
