The Full Story

The Senate has approved the Transport Authority (Amendment) Act, which seeks to increase the seating capacity of hackney carriages from four to five.

The Bill was piloted on December 3, by Minister of Justice, Senator the Hon. Mark Golding.

In his address, Senator Golding said the existing requirement in the Act is an anomaly, as the vehicles are built to carry five persons, including the driver.

“The insurance that is granted for them also permits this, but the Act doesn’t allow it (and) this has been a subject for great concern to the drivers of hackney carriage,” he noted.

The Minister said that discussions were held with the Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies, and an agreement was reached for the anomaly to be fixed.

For some time, hackney carriage operators have been calling for an amendment to the section of the Act dealing with the number of persons to be carried, to correct the anomaly that exists between the number of seats or passengers insured and the number of passengers provided for in the law in these vehicles.

The Bill was passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 3.
