The Full Story

Community groups and residents in St. Thomas on Monday (October 20) participated in the first Paul Bogle Jamboree 2003 celebrations held, at the Phillips Field Sports Complex in Yallahs.
The Jamboree, which was organised by the St. Thomas Association of Community Development Committees (STACDC) in association with the Paul Bogle Foundation, was officially opened by the Custos of St. Thomas, Rev. Leonard Saunders.
It was held under the theme, “Ole time ‘sinting’ come back again,” and was organised to give community groups and businesses the opportunity to showcase art and craft, ethnic food, as well as to participate in a talent contest.
Among the groups participating were the National Council for Senior Citizens, the Seaforth Citizens’ Association, DIGICEL, Spring Garden Community Development Committee, Pear Tree River, Dalvey and Port Morant Development Area Committees.
On display were cassava and plantain flour, asham, jams and jellies made from local fruits, cookies, grater cake, gizzarda, potato pudding and home-made wines.
Chairman of the STACDC, Emerson James, told JIS News that he was pleased with the turn out, noting that various groups and agencies in the parish occupied some 35 booths.
“The people see this as a viable entity,” he said, adding that the STACDC would assist some of the groups to start income generating projects.
Mr. James said that members of the STACDC would be meeting next month to discuss the outcome of the event and to plan for the next Jamboree. He mentioned plans to honour persons who had made significant contributions to the development of their communities at Jamboree 2004.
Rev. Saunders, in his remarks, congratulated the organisers of the event. He spoke of the need for persons to reflect on the life and work of the national heroes and noted that without them, there would be no celebrations on Heroes Day.
